Barbara M. Filipiak, of Medina, NY, entered into rest on Friday, December 19, 2025 at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo.
Born June 14, 1950 in Springville, Barb was the oldest of six children of the late Edmund P. and Wanda L. (Parysek) Filipiak. She graduated from the Immaculata Academy in Hamburg in 1968. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Education degree from D’Youville College in 1972. Barb finished her graduate work at SUNY Brockport. Shortly after, she began her 33-year teaching career at Medina Central School District as an elementary teacher at the Oak Orchard Elementary School. She retired in 2005. Following retirement, she stayed active with the Medina Teachers’ Association and the NYS Retired Teachers’ Association.
A person of strong faith, Barb was a longtime and active parishioner of Holy Trinity Parish, St. Mary’s Church in Medina. There she served as a Parish Trustee, served on the Parish Council, Finance Committee, Parish Life, Catholic Daughters and served as Eucharistic Minister. Also active in the community, Barb was a member of Orleans County Habitat for Humanity, Medina Historical Society, Sandstone Society, Cobblestone Society, NYS Delta Kappa Gamma (Alpha Theta Chapter), Friends of the Library, MAAC Thrift Store and the Medina emergency Food Pantry.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by two brothers, Michael Filipiak and Joseph Filipiak.
She is survived by her sisters, Helen (Lyle) Hochadel, Theresa Filipiak and Rosemary Harris; nephew, Kevin Frederickson; niece, Jenna Frederickson; several aunts, uncles and cousins; and many close friends in Medina.
Her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, Jan. 10 at 11AM at Holy Trinity Parish, St. Mary’s Church, 211 Eagle St., Medina, NY 14103. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Medina at a later date. Arrangements are in the care of Cooper Funeral Home, 215 W. Center St., Medina.
