Mrs. Elizabeth (Corbett) “Betty” Childs, former Medina and Albion High School Guidance Counselor, died peacefully on Saturday, January 9, 2021 at the age of 99. She was the daughter of the late Perce and Della Corbett of Walker and Brockport, NY, loving wife of the late Milford W. Childs, Jr. of Medina and mother of David Cook Childs, with whom she resided with in her final years in Gordonsville, VA.

Mrs. Childs, was born on August 8, 1921, in Brockport, attended the one room school house in Walker, before attending Brockport Central High School and the University of Rochester. She received her Master’s degree in Education and Counseling from New York University in Manhattan. Beginning in 1942, at the age of 21, she became a 12th grade English teacher in Prattsburg, and later taught in LeRoy, and Albion. She was the high school guidance counselor in Medina and then in Albion from 1962-1976, retiring from the Albion School System in 1976. 

Mrs. Childs served as President of the Niagara-Orleans Counselors Association, President of the Medina Memorial Hospital Twig Association, Chairwoman and Vice Chairwoman of the Orleans County Community Services Board, was appointed by the Governor to the New York State Board of Visitors at the West Seneca Developmental Center from 1976-1980 and to the New York State Board of Visitors, Western New York Children’s Psychiatric Center from 1976-1983. Mrs. Childs also served as the President and Vice President of the Community Counselor Centers of Orleans County, the Child Welfare Association of Orleans County, the Foster Care Advisory Committee of the Orleans County Dept. of Social Services and from 1988-1990 served as the Medina Village Historian. Betty was also a member of the Medina United Methodist Church. In her later years, Mrs. Childs enjoyed wintering at her residence in Sebastian, Florida where she enjoyed golfing with friends. 

Betty is survived by her son, David Childs and his wife, Mary Ann; and her grandchildren, Jason Corbett Childs and Dr. Kaitlyn Childs Swenson and her husband, Joshua. She was preceded in death by her husband, Milford W. Childs, Jr. on October 11, 2002.

Due to current health precautions, services will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family. Interment will be in the Childs family plot in Boxwood Cemetery, Medina. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice. Arrangements are in the care of Cooper Funeral Home, 215 W. Center St., Medina, NY 14103.
